What to Know

A quick History of Vermiculite Insulation

Did you know a mine near Libby, Montana was the source of over 70% of all vermiculite sold in the US from 1919 to 1990?

There was also a deposit of asbestos at that mine, so the vermiculite from Libby was contaminated with asbestos. Vermiculite from Libby was used in the majority of vermiculite insulation in the United States and was often sold under the brand name Zonolite. If you have vermiculite insulation in your home, you should assume this material may be contaminated with asbestos. To protect yourself and your family from exposure to asbestos, do not disturb the vermiculite insulation and instead, call us.

According to the EPA, Vermiculite is a naturally-occurring mineral composed of shiny flakes, resembling mica.

When heated to a high temperature, flakes of vermiculite expand as much as 8-30 times their original size. The expanded vermiculite is a light-weight, fire-resistant, and odorless material and has been used in numerous products, including insulation for attics and walls.

Sizes of vermiculite products range from very fine particles to large (coarse) pieces nearly an inch long.

The EPA recommends that you assume the vermiculite insulation contains asbestos. DO NOT DISTURB IT. Call us insead.

We respond to emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Our Process

Strict Protocols for Interior Vermiculite Abatement

Atlantic Abatement specializes in the removal of vermiculite insulation from all residential, commercial, and industrial facilities. We utilize the same strict protocol as we do with our normal asbestos abatement practices including:
Phase 1

Containment and Negative Pressure

A sealed area is created using industrial-grade plastic to isolate the asbestos-containing materials. Negative air machines are installed to create a negative pressure within the containment, ensuring that air flows inward to contain the fibers.

Containment and Negative Pressure
Phase 2

Removal and Disposal

Powerful HEPA-filtered vacuums are used to safely remove asbestos-containing materials. A three-chamber decontamination system is set up to allow workers to enter and exit the containment area without spreading asbestos fibers.

Phase 2
Removal and Disposal
Phase 3

Clean Up And Sealing

All workers wear appropriate PPE to protect themselves from exposure. The area is thoroughly cleaned to remove any remaining asbestos debris. A spray encapsulant is applied to seal off any remaining asbestos fibers, preventing their release.

Phase 3
Clean Up And Sealing
Phase 4

Inspection and Reoccupation

An independent industrial hygiene firm conducts a final visual inspection and air quality testing to ensure the area is safe. Once the area is certified as asbestos-free, the containment is removed, and the space can be reoccupied.
